The Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) was co-founded in 1973 by Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell and industrialist Paul N. Temple to use the tools and techniques of science to conduct research on human potentials. The Institute's research programs focus on "extended human capacities," "consciousness and healing," and "emerging worldviews". Research projects have included the study of spontaneous remission, distant healing, worldviews, and psychic abilities, among many others.
The term "noetic science" is analogous to "cognitive science" or "neuroscience." It indicates a special research focus within the larger sphere of consciousness studies. The Institute's name is derived from the Greek word nous, meaning direct or inner knowing. Noetic was poetically described by psychologist William James as "states of insight into the depths of truth unplumbed by the discursive intellect. They are illuminations, revelations, full of significance and importance, all inarticulate though they remain; and as a rule they carry with them a curious sense of authority." Today, such experiences are commonly described as gut feelings, intuitive hunches, creative insights, or psychic and mystical states. They suggest ways of knowing that go beyond the analytic and rational, and that transcend conventional sensory perceptions.
The Shift in Action partner program is designed to engage members more fully by providing more educational program access and networking tools for connecting with other members. It’s organized around the members-only Shift in Action website, and offers an ongoing stream of insight, inspiration, and excitement via teleseminar interviews, downloadable audio and video and access to features for connection, communication, and participation. And most importantly, you’ll discover leading-edge consciousness research which bridges objective science and inner wisdom.
Guests on these teleseminar interviews include luminaries such as Deepak Chopra, Larry Dossey, Andrew Harvey, Candace Pert, Neale Donald Walsch, and many more. The recordings of the live teleseminars then join an extensive archive of audio and video on this website, along with other offerings from teachers such as Marianne Williamson, Edgar Mitchell, Joanna Macy and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
You can create commentary, links, actions, and events in relation to just about everything on the website. Partners are able to publish events and find others who share your interests locally. In the five main sections of the member-only website you can:
- DISCOVER new audio, video, articles, book reviews, and art
- DECLARE opinions, declarations, and intentions
- SHARE discussions, links, pictures, and ideas
- COMMUNE with virtual connection
- MEET with local allies, events, and groups
